The Woodland Creatures series pairs common woodland fauna with phrases and found poetry from vintage books.
Often, when I am working with found phrases and poetry from books, the words come first, then I pair them with an illustration. Sometimes the illustration is a portrait of a person, like in Words and Memory. And sometimes it’s an animal, as happened in Birds and Words and Woodland Creatures.
The first illustration was “I Feel Right Good, Myself,” and the series grew from there to include bunnies, foxes, squirrels, and a crow.
A companion series to this one is my Menagerie series, which pairs words with wild animals such as elephants, buffalo, giraffe, and rhinoceros.
Both of these series are ongoing.
